Your Name and Title:  John Bovey

Organization or School Name:  LIVE Online Math

Co-Presenter Name(s): N/A

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: U.S.

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): Homeschoolers

Short Session Description (one line): Discussing the difference between teaching math vs. training kids how to "do math" and how online resources can be helpful

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): As an educator, I want my students to receive "educational value" from my work.  Too often math is “taught” by just doing worksheets and practice problems.  I would classify this as math training, not math teaching.  It's educationally valuable (not to mention reasonable from a human standpoint) to want an answer to, “Why do we need common denominators?” other than, “Because the book said so!”  Deeper understanding is needed if students are to be able to think critically and engage in the upper-level thought processes.  The explosion of the internet has created an incredible array of educational tools that can be used to actually teach math and help students reach deeper levels of understanding.

  • It looks a great discussion. The online communities and the use of different tools make the learning easier. I am having a look to your Websites. Thanks. We are in touch.

  • Looks great, John.  I'm accepting (you'll get an email from me), just need to make sure that this isn't a commercial presentation in any way (not sure what LIVE Online Math is).  Thanks!
