Your Name and Title: Dr John Mighton

Organization or School Name: JUMP Math

Co-Presenter Name(s): None

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: Toronto, Canada

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): Parents whose children are homeschooled

Short Session Description (one line):  The Myth of Ability:  Nurturing Mathematical Talent in Every child

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Research shows that children don't need to be born with a special talent to excel in math.  In a randomized controlled study, teachers used guided discovery to raise levels of achievement and engagement for all students:  students taught by this method, which I will demonstrate in my talk, progressed at twice the rate of the control group.

I will show parents how to scaffold difficult concepts so that children can grasp them and how to create incrementally harder series of challenges that help children become more engaged and confident about their abilities in math.
