The Louvre

The Louvre is one of the world's largest museums and the most visited too.

It is located in Paris in the 1st arrondissement.

The museum is in the Louvre Palace. It was originally a fortress built at the end of 12th century and became the residence of several kings of France (Philippe Auguste, Charles V , Louis XIV...)

There are always the rests of this fortress and they are still visible:

The Palace became a museum in 1971.

The museum has 8 departments :

- Near Eastern Antiquities

- Egyptian Antiquities

- Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities

- Islamic Art

- Sculptures

- Decorative Art

- Paintings

- Prints and Drawings.

Here are some most famous works of art of the Louvre Museum:

La Joconde:

La Joconde or Mona Lisa is a portrait painted in oil by Leonardo da Vinci between 1503-1519.

This painting is probably the most famous in the world.

Venus de Milo: Venus de Milo or Aphrodite of Milos is an ancient Greek statue.

Created between 130 and 100 BC, it is a marble sculpture depict the Greek goddess of love and beauty.

Winged Victory of Samothrace:

The Winged Victory of Samothrace or the Nike of Samothrace is a marble sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike/Victory.

It was created between 220 and 190 BC to honor the goddess and a sea battle.

The "scribe accroupi": The "scribe accroupi" is one of the most famous statues in Department of Egyptian Antiquities.

Egyptologists don't know the date and the identity of the scribe but they set it between 2600 and 2350 BC.

The Coronation of Napoleon:

The Coronation of Napoleon is a famous painting painted by Jacques-Louis David between 1805 and 1807.

Jacques-Louis David was the official painter of Napoleon.

My Opinion:

For me, the Louvre is the best museum in the world.

My favorite work of art is The Winged Victory of Samothrace because it is situated at the top of a giant stairs and it is very impressive.

I visited the Louvre several times and I really enjoyed it !

If you go to Paris, visit it, it's really great !!!
