Target Audience(s): Parents, Teachers, Administrators living and working with Teenagers

Short Session Description (one line):

From Bored to Builder; supporting and apathetic teens engage with the experience of their lives.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

This session will offer strategies and tools to support student-led, project-based learning within institutional contexts. These strategies and tools may also be appropriate outside the institutional context with learners who are challenged to become more self-starting. The premise is to use the principles of Finance (choice as currency, ownership as investment) to engage stakeholders (learners, teachers, parents, administrators) in the practice of Positive Psychology; to focus efforts on pushing the ceiling on success rather than raising the floor on failure. By implementing tools and rituals that capture the learning process rather than measuring outcomes, all stakeholders can use these Humanist Investment Portfolios to celebrate learning efforts. Learners recognise themselves as enabled, able to take agency for their own decisions, investing themselves in manners appropriate to the specific contexts of their lives. The resulting learning evidence can also be used for administrative purposes (course credit, institutional requirements et al) while allowing adults to transition from directors and evaluators to mentors and auditors, transitioning the culture of institutional classroom to more humanist, student-influenced learning spaces.
