About Me
My family has had quite the educational journey, as the public schools were unable to meet our profoundly gifted kids’ needs in the early years. After successfully advocating for a two-grade (and now three-grade) acceleration, we finally pulled our kids out of the school system and chose a free-er, faster, more exciting, and more engaging educational path. Though we entered the ranks of the nation’s homeschoolers, we still remain devoted to the support and improvement of public education. For years we have lived in a state that allows part-time enrollment in public school; as a result, our kids have enjoyed a “hybrid” education, and we have been able to truly individualize their studies and extra-curricular activities to balance intellectual stimulation, creative pursuits, and a healthy social life. Every year is different, but this year, my 13-year-old son has re-entered public school full-time as a high school junior; he will graduate when he is 14. My 10-year-old daughter enjoys primarily a home education environment, but takes music classes at the public middle school as a 7th grader; she also enjoys their Science Olympiad team. Above all, we are a family of writers and musicians, and our house bubbles over with novels and poems, short stories, vignettes, jazz band compositions, and rock ballads. We seek to connect with people near and far, bringing them into our home, and sharing music and story and passion, giving and taking, and making something new and exciting together. I keep a blog about our experiences at gwynridenhour.wordpress.com. By the end of January, that blog will be relocated and found at www.steampoweredclassroom.com.
