Traditional schooling, with its structure of forced academics, confinement, time-stealing and denial of children's basic needs often strangles children's innate passion and craving for learning and creating, especially for artistic, musical and kinesthetic learners. Media and screen addiction are also responsible for distracting youth from their creative talents, from physical activities and from engaging in real world adventures.

Unschooling is not a new trend, nor is it a new way of learning. Although the term "unschooling" was coined by the late homeschool pioneer, John Holt in 1977, the practice of children living and learning in freedom, through play and exploration, is as old as humanity. Nature intended youth of all ages, from infants and toddlers to older children and adolescents, to learn through play, exploration, creative expression, movement, family and social interaction and by following one's passions, interests and abilities.

Although unschooling is nature's intent for all children, no two young people will venture on their unschooling journey in the same manner. Some youth prefer a more structured approach to learning, while many youth crave freedom and constant stimulation. Most youth need a combination of both. Unschooling caters to all three learning styles (kinesthetic, visual, auditory) and all seven forms of intelligence!

Laurie will be discussing learning theory, unschooling in the context of attachment parenting, how unschooling meets the developmental needs of youth and how our Hunter-Gatherer tribal ancestors "unschooled" for millennia in the context of "attachment parenting". She will discuss the unschooling journey of her family and how families can get started on their own unschooling journey, today, whether your child is 5 or 17!

Brycen will be discussing some of his unschooling experiences and how unschooling met his needs as a learner, musician, artist and human being. He will discuss how unschooling allowed him to pursue his music career, start a small business and focus on community service, family and friends. He will also be discussing the dilemmas of working through dealing with the expectations of the "outside world" when people who live by traditional views of schooling, growing up, work and play do not value freedom in young people to live, grow and meet milestones on their own unique time tables. I was a college professor teaching chemistry and biology at community colleges before retiring to homeschool my son. I also write secular science textbooks for the REAL Science Odyssey series. A handcrafted education should focus on the unique strengths, weaknesses, and passions of each student. There are some academic subjects that everybody should know, but even within these subjects there is room to be flexible in a child-led manner. There are other subjects that deserve time and attention because of the skill and desire of that one student, creating an education that is as unique as each student. This workshop will look at how you go about creating the recipe for a handcrafted education that will result in a well-educated child, with lots of options, who loves to learn.

Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session: This is not really associated with my talk, but I do have a blog: blairleeblog.wordpress.com & a public Facebook page: Blair Lee M.S.

An Introduction to Self-Directed Learninghttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/forum/topics/an-introduction-to-self-directed-learning2014-07-04T02:34:31.000Z2014-07-04T02:34:31.000ZLuba Vangelovahttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/members/LubaVangelova

Your Name and Title: Luba Vangelova

Co-Presenter Name(s):

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: Washington, DC, United States

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): Parents, educators, and anyone else with an interest in learning about different educational approaches

Short Session Description (one line): This session will introduce people to the concept of self-directed learning, and the different settings and ways in which it can be applied.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Self-directed learning -- education driven by what the student wants to learn -- is a concept that has been gaining favor. How are the parents' and educators' roles different in a self-directed learning environment? How does this type of learning affect students' relationships with family members and people within the broader community? What are the range of ways that self-directed learning can be practiced in institutions, in informal groups, and/or in homes? Media reports tend to focus on older home-educated children withdrawing from school but very little is known about younger children many of whom have never been to school in the UK. This research sought insight into the learning experience of these young children. The study involved 35 home-educated children aged between four and five years of age, from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. The children were assessed using the Performance Indicators in Primary Schools (Start and End of Reception) and their results compared with schooled peers. It was found that the reported leap in learning generally associated with early schooling is present in the homeschooled sample and further, that the homeschooled group outperformed their schooled counterparts, indicating perhaps, that by initiating ever earlier school starting ages we are unwittingly inhibiting children’s cognitive focus and potential.

Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session: www.paularothermel.com

The "fully" untapped potential of Open educational resources to individualize instructionhttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/forum/topics/the-fully-untapped-potential-of-open-educational-resources-to2013-08-21T22:17:54.000Z2013-08-21T22:17:54.000ZSri Lekhahttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/members/SriLekha

Your Name and Title: Sri Lekha. Are we aware of our observing for learning? How do we know what the child really wants to learn? or when the child is learning? To see a child as a unique person, we must observe who our child is, what our child loves doing, and not what we think he or she should be doing or what we want to see. Some words, for example, ‘ego’, ‘self esteem’ and ‘tribals’ are used loosely without any attempt to define them objectively. I have attempted to make my subjective meaning clear through the context within which these words appear. I like to call myself a Whole Being Learner, which means that mind learning is integrated with sensory and practical experiences (and possibly more parts of the being that I am not yet aware of!) It’s not like I am a learned being who is telling everyone what’s right and what’s not. My learning is all jumbled inside me, and when I write or speak or share, it is my attempt at getting small patches of my learning un entangled sufficiently enough to help my own learning, (and anyone else who is interested), progress towards the next small patch of clarity.

The paper makes an assumption that today’s structures and systems are the cause of fragmentation within and disconnection without. It encourages us to support and love each other in at least one primary relationship, and also in localized groups. To begin, we can practice being non judgmental and critical. These include facilitation positions as jnr moderators and technical roles as assistant server administrators who help with support and planning.

This session will demonstrate how Minecraft can be used to provide an exciting learning environment for kids which fosters their creativity, supports social learning and the development of digital literacy skills, and can be used across a wide range of key learning areas including math, science, art, creative writing, history, personal development, technology and citizenship.

Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session:

Massively @ jokaydia Guild Website: http://massively.jokaydia.com/

jokaydia Minecrafts Project Site: http://minecraft.jokaydia.com/

Home Education in England and Waleshttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/forum/topics/home-education-in-england-and-wales2013-08-12T09:23:45.000Z2013-08-12T09:23:45.000ZLeslie Safran Barsonhttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/members/LeslieSafranBarson

Your Name and Title: Leslie Safran Barson

Organization or School Name: The Otherwise Club

Co-Presenter Name(s): None

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: England

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): Any one interested in freedom in education

Short Session Description (one line): Home Education in England and Wales

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):
In this talk I will give a brief historical overview of Home Education in England and Wales, the legal situation, outline of a central government attack on the right to home educate in 2009 and what changes this and other political and economic pressures have made. The good news is that there is a “phonetics” requirement in the US Common Core Educational curriculum for K-1 students perfect for truespel phonetics.

The big problem in literacy is that the IPA and dictionary guides are not good for showing English pronunciation because they use special symbols. Thus, writing with phonetics is not taught in US grade schools, nor is it used in US media or government publications. Basically, academic phonetics is mostly useless outside academia. To overcome this, truespel phonetics is designed to use only the letters of the alphabet to enable “writing” as well as reading phonetically. This is new – and brings forward a huge number of academic possibilities, such as phonetic awareness assessment and ELT phoneme display.

The best part is that truespel is easy to learn and free. See the truespel phonetics youtube tutorials listed at http://justpaste.it/useit. For ESL, when the 40 sounds are mastered, learners can speak US English without a problem. They can read US English phonetically with minimal accent by pasting paragraphs into the two-way converter at http://truespel.com. The converter displays phonetics next to traditional text to show pronunciation, and words can be clicked to show definitions. (Note the spelling is based on US English, and the pronunciation model is from the spoken words of US "talking" dictionaries. The vast majority (57%-Wikipedia) of native English speakers are from North America.)

I’d like to work with you in developing and applying truespel phonetics in the future. It’s finally the answer for integrating reading texts with dictionaries, translation guides, ESL, phonemic aptitude assessment, and analytic methodologies. Results of ongoing trials in Korea show that high school students vastly prefer truespel phonetics to IPA or dictionary notations that use special symbols. It's learnable in 15 minutes they say, and in a short time they were actually “writing” notes in phonetics to show pronunciation.

I've recently co-authored a paper on the upgrading of the Korea language based on truespel phonetics. The paper is "The Romanizaton of Korean using TrueKor," presented at The International Conference for the Korean Association for Corpus Linguistics (KACL 2012) on December 10, 2012, by Hyung J. Martin, UNIversal Language Institute and Thomas E. Zurinskas, Truespel Inc.

The four truespel books are at authorhouse.com http://tinyurl.com/truespelbooks . They consist of a VOA dictionary with a truespel pronunciation guide (where none was present at all) and two books of phoneme frequency analyses. All English teachers should be familiar with the data in these books. A free course on truespel phonetics is at http://justpaste.it/course2.

Phonetics should be simple, not hard. For a quick demo see http://tinyurl.com/40numfox ESL learners need only know how to say the sounds in this demo to speak correctly any word in US English.

My presentation will show how truespel can be used in spreadsheets to analyze phoneme frequency which includes an analysis of words frequency in text and thus phoneme frequency in text for the top 5k most popular English words.

Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session:

http://truespel.com

http://accessyoutube.org.uk/truespel

Abstract.docx

Princeton Learning Cooperative: Helping teens live and learn without schoolhttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/forum/topics/princeton-learning-cooperative-helping-teens-live-and-learn2013-08-09T01:08:21.000Z2013-08-09T01:08:21.000ZAlison Snieckushttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/members/AlisonSnieckus

Your Name and Title: Alison Snieckus, PLC staff member

Organization: Princeton Learning Cooperative

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: New Jersey, USA

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): educators, homeschooling parents

Short Session Description: a discussion of how Princeton Learning Cooperative uses the North Star model to help teens live and learn without school

Full Session Description: The Princeton Learning Cooperative is a center which helps teenagers live & learn without school by supporting teens to create a personalized education based on their interests, abilities and goals. Apple has always designed excellent hardware but with their iPhone, iPad and the whole IOS ecosystem they gone a step further and have designed a mobile communication or networking environment that just works. If we apply a similar purposeful design to our children's learning environments we also can create a significant learning environment that just works. Whether we are purposeful in its design or we just allow the circumstances to dictate its development, home educators are providing learning environments for their children. Rather than allow the environment to come together on its own and respond reactively to the learning dynamics that arise I suggest that home educators become proactive and create significant learning environments. In this session we will explore how to start with a student centred approach and purposefully assemble all the key components of effective learning into a significant learning environment that will help our children to learn how to learn and grow into the people we all hope they will become.

Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session:

Significant Learning Environments
http://www.harapnuik.org/?p=2988

About Dwayne Harapnuik
http://www.harapnuik.org/?page_id=2

Enterprising Students in Institutional Contextshttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/forum/topics/enterprising-students-in-institutional-contexts2013-07-31T23:02:47.000Z2013-07-31T23:02:47.000ZEric Rosenberghttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/members/EricRosenberg

Your Name and Title: Eric Rosenberg

Organization or School Name: The Eric Rosenberg Development Studio

Area of the World from Which You Will Present: Toronto, Canada

Language in Which You Will Present: English

Target Audience(s): Parents, Teachers, Administrators living and working with Teenagers

Short Session Description (one line):

From Bored to Builder; supporting and apathetic teens engage with the experience of their lives.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

This session will offer strategies and tools to support student-led, project-based learning within institutional contexts. The premise is to use the principles of Finance (choice as currency, ownership as investment) to engage stakeholders (learners, teachers, parents, administrators) in the practice of Positive Psychology; to focus efforts on pushing the ceiling on success rather than raising the floor on failure. By implementing tools and rituals that capture the learning process rather than measuring outcomes, all stakeholders can use these Humanist Investment Portfolios to celebrate learning efforts. Learners recognise themselves as enabled, able to take agency for their own decisions, investing themselves in manners appropriate to the specific contexts of their lives. The “something else” typically belongs to a standard roster of learning outcomes, already known and classified according to the knowledge system in the community prevailing around the learner. While not learning this prevailing knowledge, the learner explores other knowledge, with a freedom that depends precisely on the inability of the prevailing community to recognize and classify that knowledge. The learner pursues knowledge as if doing it for the first time in history, regardless of its value or correctness in the prevailing knowledge system.

Therefore while typical education programs may have a checklist of learning outcomes that will be used to evaluate the learners, with more checked items indicating more learning and in turn greater success of the program, slow learning looks between and beneath the checked items to the inner curriculum driving the learning of the child. They guide how you apportion your time on a daily, weekly, and yearly basis. While they serve as “driving directions” for your learning, they are like their transportation counterparts in that they may change due to the reality of construction and new development. In that sense, homeschooling goals are also flexible, you can change and adapt them as needed. Writing goals is kind of like writing haiku: you don’t use too many words, but the ones you do use pack a punch. In this session we'll discuss one method for writing goals and practice writing some sample goals.Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session:
Presentation Proposal: The Case for The Abolition of Tests in High Schoolshttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/forum/topics/presentation-proposal-the-case-for-the-abolition-of-tests-in-high2013-07-16T09:39:54.000Z2013-07-16T09:39:54.000ZGraham W. This is achieved by means of a scientifically managed system of schooling that trains people, from as early an age as possible, in conformity and obedience, and punishes individuality and constructive creativity. Devoid of any real life experience and personal responsibility the students lose their personal identity as the values of the state education institution are forced on tomorrows generation. The most fundamental and absolutely essential element of this meaningless form of psychological child abuse is the incessant classroom test.

So, let's breakdown the real effects of tests on students, teachers and school.

Websites / URLs Associated with Your Session:

www.nsa-slovakia.com

www.nsa-education.com

Presentation Proposal: The Six Purposes of Secondary Educationhttps://www.startingtohomeschool.org/forum/topics/presentation-proposal-the-six-purposes-of-secondary-education2013-07-16T09:29:33.000Z2013-07-16T09:29:33.000ZGraham W.
